[Year 4] Charity Cake Sale

Enterprise Club Raise Money for Sightbox UK

Our Enterprise Club were given the task of creating a business idea with the intention of raising money for charity. First of all we had a meeting as a group to decide what venture we would like to do and if it would be cost effective. We had a few great ideas such as decorative baskets, soap and bookmarks but finally we decided to make bath bombs. We costed all the ingredients from lots of different places and once we found a total price we asked the St Oswald’s business manager Mr Strom for a business loan to cover the initial outlay. We made many different types of bath bombs including colour-changing lavender, zingy orange, frozen sparkles, rose petal delight, grapefruit sparkle and many more. They were a huge success! We sold out each playtime and had to keep making more to meet demand. We made bath bombs until we ran out of materials, all were sold immediately. Mr Strom then informed us that St Oswald’s would waiver the amount we borrowed from the school.

Therefore we are delighted to announce that St Oswald’s Enterprise Club has raised £206.00 for the charity Sightbox UK.

[School Council] Juvenile Diabetes

Throughout the spring term, we have been fundraising for Juvenile diabetes. As a school council, we came together to discuss what we would like to do in order to do this. We met with Scarlet in 6KN to discuss type 1 diabetes and how we could help. We decided to hold a competition involving how much sugar was in a jar of sweets. Children would be able to estimate the amount of sugar in the jar. The closest guess would win the jar of sweets for their class, as well as an additional prize; a £25 gift card for Liverpool One for the junior winner and a giant teddy for the infant winner. In addition to this, we decided to hold a ‘Dance for Diabetes’ event. Mrs Hindley also kindly donated an Everton football shirt, signed by the first team. We decided we would sell raffle tickets for this. After weeks of hard work by School councillors, particularly Olivia and Harry from 5RD and Dominika and Mia from 4DH, we raised £261 for the Juvenile Diabetes charity. We would like to thank everyone that participated in all these events and donated to this very worthy cause. We would also like to congratulate the winners of our fantastic prizes!

School council are always working hard at making St. Oswald’s School an enjoyable, safe place to learn, and we look forward to our projects to come.

[Year 6] NSPCC Number Day 2017

A big thank you to all the children, parents and carers who helped make the NSPCC Number Day such a success. All the children looked fabulous with their number themed outfits and we managed to raise a wonderful £443.79 for the NSPCC Charity.

The children had a great day designing and making their very own board games and carrying out interesting investigations such as:

  • how many blades of grass are there in St. Oswald’s field?
  • are taller children, faster runners?
  • length of your elbow to your wrist is the same as the length of your foot? is this always sometimes or never true?

Lots of fun maths took place during the day, whilst raising money for an important cause.

Thank you!

Spring Charities

Dear Parent / Carer,

As I am sure you are already aware at St. Oswald’s we feel it is important to help others where and when possible. Each term we try to have a charitable focus and this term we will be focusing upon raising money and supporting the following charities:

  • Wear it Blue for Bobby’ – Bobby Colleran Trust
  • Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation- JDRF
  • The Good Shepherd Appeal- Nugent Care (during Lent)

On Friday 3rd March we are having a ‘Wear it Blue’ day in support of The Bobby Colleran Trust.

On this day children need to pay £1.00 to wear their own clothes; children should try to wear blue , whether they are dressed head to toe in blue or they wear a blue top it is entirely up to you.

This is a local charity, which I am sure you will agree is a very worthwhile cause. Road safety is a very important issue which we take seriously here at St Oswalds’ .

The school council have also arranged a few activities over the next few weeks to raise further money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation including:

  • A fun dancing session for all children on ‘Wear it Blue’ day and the children are asked to bring small donations for this worthwhile cause.
  • A raffle for a signed Everton shirt – 50p for two tickets
  • A ‘Guess how much sugar is in a jar of sweets’ competition- 50p for two guesses (A prize will be given to whoever is the closest) .

Thank you for your continued support

Welcome to our first edition of St. Oswald’s maths newsletter, which is designed to keep you up to date with everything that is going on in maths in our school. Remember to keep checking our school website and follow us on twitter to see photographs of all the children loving maths.  If you have any questions about maths, do not hesitate to get in contact.

Mrs. McBrien (Maths Champion)

Numeracy for Life

We are encouraging the children to think about how they use maths outside of school and in everyday life. All children in KS2 have a ‘maths passport’, where they can record ways they have used maths in the real world.

This could be with a shape, counting money in a shop, measuring and weighing when cooking, measuring the length of something, or anything else you can think of to do with maths.

We would love it if the children can take a maths selfie of them doing something maths related outside of school and bring it in where we will display the photographs. Alternatively, you could always post the photograph on our twitter @StOswaldsPriLiv

Maths Monkeys

Each class in Nursery, Reception and KS1 has its own Maths Monkey and the children are invited to take it in turns to take him or her home with them and do some maths. Each Maths Monkey has its own diary to record what it has been up to. When it is your child’s turn to bring Maths Monkey home, please could you think of some maths they could do together and encourage your child to record it in the diary. If you could take a photo of Maths Monkey doing maths with your child, that would be great. There are lots of places to do maths – the shops, supermarket, the park, the museum – anywhere at all, as maths is everywhere.

St. Oswald’s Times Tables Challenge

In order to raise the profile of learning times tables through the school, we have adopted a ‘Whole School Times Table Challenge’ award system, to ensure continuity across the school and to encourage the children to learn their times tables facts and to be able to recall them quickly and accurately. The challenge focuses on rewarding children when they are proficient in a number of times tables. Encourage your child to practise at home too.

Have a look on the website for details of the awards.

Mr. Crowther has written and the vocal group recorded a St. Oswald’s Times Tables CD.

Ask your child to sing their favourite times tables song to you.

National Numeracy

National Numeracy is an independent charity established in 2012 to help raise levels of numeracy among both adults and children and to promote the importance of everyday maths skills.

This is taken from their website:

Talking about maths

As a parent or carer, you give your child their first experiences with maths.

Even if you do not feel confident with maths, you can still make a huge difference to how your child’s numeracy confidence and ability develops.

Top tips

● Be positive about maths. Don’t say things like “I can’t do maths” or “I hated maths at school”; your child might start to think like that themselves.

● Point out the maths in everyday life. Include your child in activities involving maths such as using money, cooking and travelling.

● Praise your child for effort rather than talent this shows them that by working hard they can always improve.

Have a look at their site nationalnumeracy.org.uk where you will find the ‘Family Maths Toolkit’, which is full of ideas and activities.

Y2 Maths Games Library

Mr. Crowther has been running a Y2 ‘parent/carer and child’ maths board game lending library. It is open every Friday morning, 8:30-8:45 and you have the opportunity to choose a maths board game with your child, take it home and return it the following Friday when you can choose another. The children enjoy playing the games at home and are keen to choose another the following week.

Please do come along, if you have some spare time on a Friday morning.

Parents Maths Challenge

How many triangles can you see?

Parents Maths Challenge

The children in every class get weekly or daily maths challenges. We thought it would be good for parents to join in the fun too.    Every month there will be a new maths challenge for you to test your skills on.

The challenge will also be on the school website and a winner will be drawn from all parental entries. If you complete the puzzle, jot down your details and send your solution into school with your child.

The winner’s name will be published on the school website and you will receive a certificate.

Parent Helpers

Any parents who are interested in helping out with maths in the school, whether it be helping children learn their times tables, or helping with maths events that we run in school, please do let Mrs. McBrien know. You just have to have an interest in maths and pass that enjoyment on to the children.

Last term we had parents who came in to talk to groups of children about how they use maths in their workplace. The children loved this, as they could see how the subject is relevant for their future jobs and careers. If this is something you would be interested in doing, please contact Mrs. McBrien, who is the school Maths Champion, through the school office.

CAFOD World Gifts

Christmas Jumper Day

A Huge Thank You…

For all your support to make our Make the World Better with a Sweater  day a huge success. We raised £527.50 for these amazing charities.

Make the World Better with a Sweater

Dear Parents/Carers,

As we enter the season of Advent in preparation for the Christmas celebrations, on our website is the lists of events and relevant dates. www.stoswaldsschool.com, I hope that as many of you as possible will join us for some of them but especially any of the school Collective Worships of the Nativity.

As is normal practice for all Catholic schools, December sees the start of our collection on behalf of Cafod, the Catholic association for overseas development. Each class will be choosing a gift from the Cafod brochure that they would like to send to someone on behalf of their classes; the gifts range from chirpy chicken to helping to fund a community toilet! The children do something positive to rediscover the real meaning of Christmas, sharing the love, peace and joy at this special time of year. If you could encourage your child to donate some of their pocket money, then they will be fully embracing the Christ in Christmas.

To help towards this cause on Tuesday 13th December the children are invited to attend school in either Christmas jumpers or in jumpers decorated with Christmas baubles, tinsel etc., nobody should go to any additional expense; the home decorated jumpers are always the best!

The children should pay £1.00 towards the fundraising day and half monies will be spent by the classes choosing their special gift and half to Save the Children.

This day is also Christmas dinner day so will be a lovely celebration in school.

Yours sincerely

Mrs M Walsh

Head Teacher

Marie Curie Toy Appeal

We are extremely proud and grateful of the families of St. Oswald’s Primary for the amount of toys collected for our Marie Curie Toy Appeal. The volunteers for Marie Curie were overwhelmed at the amount of toys collected and said this was the most they had ever seen. We have even made it into the Liverpool Echo! It took a van two trips to take all of the toys to the collection centre and we are awaiting a total on the amount raised through this appeal. We would like to send a huge thank you out to the families of St. Oswald’s for rising up to the challenge set before them. Thank you also to all of our school councillors who raised awareness of the appeal throughout school and helped with loading the van on the day. We hope that these toys may help to make Christmas better for all those who will benefit.

As always, the families of St. Oswald’s Primary School have risen to the challenge set before them. We are absolutely overwhelmed at the sheer amount of toys that have been donated. It is important to us as a school to demonstrate the Gospel Values which we aim to live by. We hope that these toys may go towards helping those who are not as well off as ourselves and aid the mission of the Marie Curie charity.
