Year 2 – Brief Overview
Year 2 is the final year in Key Stage 1, we continue to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in all curriculum areas. There is a strong focus on the children’s progress in their basic skills of reading, writing and maths. At the end of this academic year, each child will be assessed against national standards. They will be assessed in Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science and these assessments are designed to check that children in all schools are making progress. In addition, we have a range of exciting foundation topics such as The Great Fire of London in history and ‘Oceans and Continents’ in geography. We aim to make sure the children are ready to make the step up to the juniors with confidence.
Key Information
PE will be on Tuesday, Thursdays and sometimes Fridays. Please ensure that children have their PE kits in school on those days. PE days can change occasionally so we recommend having their PE kits in each day just in case and only taking it home for washing at the end of a week from time to time.
Monday – Homework given out
Tuesday – PE kit needed
Thursday – PE kit needed, reading records/RWI books due back in
Friday – Homework due in. Reading records and books given back out
Homework in Year 2
Homework will be given out each Monday to be completed and returned on Friday.
Maths and English homework will be given out weekly to reinforce some of the key learning for Year 2. The children need to know their 2, 3, 5 and 10-times tables before the end of year 2. The children will also practise reading and spelling the Common Exception Words for Year 2.
Joined handwriting and English comprehension homework may sometimes be given.
If you have any issues completing the homework then please let your class teacher know so that we can provide guidance and support. Weekly homework tasks should not be too taxing or stressful and should take no longer than 30 minutes.
Reading at Home – Organisation and Expectations
Children will be given a Phonics book and a ‘Reading for Pleasure book’ from the class collection. All children are expected to read out loud to an adult or older sibling every night. Reading records are to be signed by an adult. Please record this in the children’s reading records so this can be checked by a Year 2 adult.
Reading journals will be looked at on Thursday and books will then be changed ready to take home on Friday. Please note, they will only be changed if it has been written in their reading record that they have read the book.
The Phonics Screening Test for the children in Year 2 who did not pass the Phonics Screening Test, will take place later in the year. Please contact school if you would like further information.
