Year 2 is the final year in Key Stage 1, we continue to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in all curriculum areas. There is a strong focus on the children’s progress in their basic skills of reading, writing and maths. At the end of this academic year, each child will be assessed against national standards. They will be assessed in Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science and these assessments are designed to check that children in all schools are making progress. In addition, we have a range of exciting foundation topics such as The Great Fire of London in history and ‘Oceans and Continents’ in geography. We aim to make sure the children are ready to make the step up to the juniors with confidence.
PE will be on Tuesday and Thursday this term so please ensure that children have their PE kits in school on those days. PE days can change occasionally so we recommend having their PE kits in each day just in case and only taking it home for washing at the end of a week from time to time.
Monday – Homework given out
Tuesday – PE kit needed
Thursday – PE kit and reading records/RWI books due back in
Friday – Homework due in. Reading records and books given back out
Homework in Year 2
Homework will be given out each Monday to be completed and returned on Friday.
Maths and English homework will be given out weekly to reinforce work done in class. The children need to know their 2, 3, 5 and 10-times tables before the end of year 2. They have individual passwords for Times Tables Rock Stars to access at home which is a fun way of learning them.
The children will practise reading and spelling the Common Exception Words for Year 2.
Joined handwriting, grammar and English Comprehension homework may sometimes be given.
If you have any issues completing the homework then please let your class teacher know so that we can provide guidance and support. Weekly homework tasks should not be too taxing or stressful and should take no longer than 30 minutes.
Reading at Home – Organisation and Expectations
All children are expected to read out loud to an adult or older sibling every night. Reading records are to be signed by an adult. Please record this in the children’s reading records so this can be checked by a Year 2 adult.
Reading journals will be looked at on Thursday and books will then be changes ready to take home on Friday. Please note, they will only be changed if it has been written in their reading record that they have read the book.
The school subscribes to the Oxford Owl eBook library which contains a wide selection of books from across Oxford’s most popular series. The books are carefully levelled and progress in reading difficulty from those appropriate for Reception right through to those suitable for Year 6. The children have a password and username to access the library.
The Phonics Screening Test for the children in Year 2 who did not pass the Phonics Screening Test, will take place later in the year. Please contact school if you would like further information.
