Brief Overview

Year 2 is the final year in Key Stage 1, we continue to develop children’s knowledge, skills and understanding in all curriculum areas.  At the end of this academic year, each child will be assessed against national standards. They will be assessed in Reading, Writing, Mathematics and Science and these assessments are designed to check that children in all schools are making progress.

Key Information

Monday – Homework given out
Tuesday/Wednesday – Reading journals checked and reading books changed
Wednesday – PE kit needed for games/PE
Friday – PE kit needed for dance/PE. Homework due in.

Homework in Year 2

Homework will be given out each Monday to be completed and returned on Friday.

Maths homework will be given out weekly to reinforce work done in class. The children need to know their 2, 3, 5- and 10-times tables before the end of year 2. They have individual passwords for Times Tables Rock Stars to access at home which is a fun way of learning them.

Spellings will be given out on Monday for a quiz on Friday.

In addition to weekly spelling rules, the children will practise reading and spelling the Common Exception Words for Year 2.

Joined handwriting homework and English Comprehension homework may sometimes be given.

Reading at Home – Organisation and Expectations

All children are expected to read out loud to an adult or older sibling every night. Reading records are to be signed by an adult. Please record this in the children’s reading records so this can be checked by a Year 2 adult.

Reading journals will be looked at on Tuesday and Wednesday when books will be changed. Please note, they will only be changed if it has been written in their reading record that they have read the book.

The school subscribes to the Oxford Owl eBook library which contains a wide selection of books from across Oxford’s most popular series. The books are carefully levelled and progress in reading difficulty from those appropriate for Reception right through to those suitable for Year 6. The children have a password and username to access the library.
